The island in six days out

Mud, peaks and rum: the St Lucia shortlist.

A volcano you drive into, a peak you climb before the heat arrives, a rainforest you cross on a wire, and the boat that beats the coast road. Six days most St Lucia weeks are built around.

Soufriere

Soufriere holds the half of St Lucia you flew for.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 486 travellers on the busiest run

The Pitons, the steaming crater, the botanical gardens and the waterfall everyone photographs sit within twenty minutes of each other. Getting there is the real decision: two hours down the west coast road, or the morning sail that arrives with the light still soft.

By sea

Down the west coast under sail

Full day· from $138· lunch aboard

Flat water the whole way, the Pitons growing all morning, and a swim stop at Anse Cochon that the road version never gets near.

The volcano day

Mud bath, waterfall, Pitons viewpoint

7–8h· from $115· hotel pickup

Warm grey mud that stains a swimsuit for good, a cold waterfall to rinse in, and lunch in Soufriere between the two.

The climb

Gros Piton with a guide

4h round trip· from $90· early start

Stone steps and tree roots from the interpretive centre at Fond Gens Libre. A registered guide comes with every group and the heat sets the pace.

Where you are staying

Almost every St Lucia tour collects you in the north.

Rodney Bay, Gros Islet and Cap Estate hold most of the island’s beds, so most operators start their day up there. What you book is rarely a north coast tour. It is an island day with a north coast pickup, and the run south is part of it.

Only here

Nowhere else has the mud, the peaks or the still.

Beaches and rum punch belong to the whole Caribbean. Sitting in a volcano, walking up a Piton and drinking what the Roseau valley distils belong to this island.

Into the crater

The Sulphur Springs Mud Bath

The road runs into the crater above Soufriere and stops beside pools of grey, sulphur-warm mud. You coat yourself, bake until it cracks, then rinse in the stream below. It smells of struck matches for hours afterwards and everybody does it anyway.

Two peaks, one path

Gros Piton

The bigger of the two peaks is the one you walk up. It starts at Fond Gens Libre with a registered guide, runs about four hours there and back, and is stone steps and tree roots the whole way. Leave at six if you want the summit before the cloud settles on it.

Roseau valley

St Lucian Rum

The island distils a few miles inland from Marigot Bay, and a tasting runs from white overproof through the aged bottles that leave the valley in crates. Most trips pair it with the cocoa estates further up the same road.

Book before you fly

Book these before you land at Hewanorra.

Most of St Lucia can be arranged at the hotel desk the night before. These cannot. They run on transfer schedules, guide rosters and a single morning departure.

  1. 01St. Lucia Private Airport & Hotel TransfersHewanorra sits at the far south end of the island. Rodney Bay is ninety minutes back up the coast road, and nothing scheduled meets a late flight.
  2. 02Gros Piton Hike with Dannyboy & Co.Nobody walks up Gros Piton alone. A registered guide from the interpretive centre goes with every group, and the cool early slots are taken first.
  3. 03St Lucia Full-Day Catamaran Sightseeing Cruise With SnorkelingThe full-day sail down the west coast leaves in the morning and does not run twice. Cruise-ship mornings fill it first.
When it rains

Rain in St Lucia is warm, brief and no reason to stay in.

The wet season runs June to November and mostly turns up as an afternoon hour that has cleared by five. The mud bath does not care, the distillery is under a roof, and the rainforest is better dripping. Keep the beach day for tomorrow.
