The road runs into the crater above Soufriere and stops beside pools of grey, sulphur-warm mud. You coat yourself, bake until it cracks, then rinse in the stream below. It smells of struck matches for hours afterwards and everybody does it anyway.

Gros Piton
The bigger of the two peaks is the one you walk up. It starts at Fond Gens Libre with a registered guide, runs about four hours there and back, and is stone steps and tree roots the whole way. Leave at six if you want the summit before the cloud settles on it.

St Lucian Rum
